Questions re: Buying a gun in Japan/permits

This might have an obvious answer, as you need an import permit to import an airsoft gun.
But what if you go to Japan on a holiday and buy a gun there. Can you just bring it back with you in your checked luggage?

Or if a member of your family in Japan sends it to you here in NZ?

Do I still need to organise a permit?

If the gun enters NZ it needs a permit. So if you have one you can transport it like you would any firearm. Poncho bought two hicapas in this way back in the day (from Japan).

So I would need to organise a permit, even though im unsure of what gun I want to buy when I get to Japan?

Correct. You'll need a permit, which requires you know what gun you're getting, which will indeed make browsing the shelves a little difficult. I'm not sure how vague you can be on the permit. If I recall, they want to know the make, model and retailer for the permit.

You can always buy the gun and have the store or your contacts in Japan ship it to you once you have a permit.

I have a Glock I bought in Japan being held by Cheerio which I should really get a permit for.
